With devastating logic and clarity, Dr Pandora Pound,
Research Director at Safer Medicines Trust, comprehensively
dismantles the case for animal research, bringing to an end
the 150-year-old debate about its value once and for all. Focusing
on the science rather than animal suffering – and including no
distressing details – she provides a riveting account
of how the practice became so well established, before
proceeding to painstakingly reveal the futility and shockingly poor
quality of most animal studies. Medical progress is being
thwarted by an obsolete and harmful practice, but Pound
showcases the awe-inspiring technologies, both old and new,
that would revolutionise medicine if only it could escape the
stranglehold of animal research. Rat Trap slays the many myths
about animal research and shows that, far from being a
necessary evil, it is one of the most important and urgent
scientific issues of our time. ‘What a corker of a book! A superb
analysis of the promises and pitfalls limiting the use of animals
in medical research. Lucid and elegantly written. Highly
recommended.’ -- Dr James Le Fanu, doctor, columnist for
the Daily Telegraph and author of Too Many Pills and The Rise and
Fall of Modern Medicine. ‘Beautifully written, her arguments hum
with clarity. Destined to be a classic and to make a difference in
the world.’ -- Dr Ricardo Blaug, political scientist and author
of How Power Corrupts. ‘Dr Pandora Pound transformed the debate
on animal experiments in 2004 as lead author of the landmark study
‘Where is the evidence that animal research benefits humans?’.
Published in the prestigious British Medical Journal, it
provoked a storm of controversy – and a series of scientific
studies revealing the startling unreliability of animals as
surrogates for humans in medical research. As a result, reports of
‘breakthroughs’ based on animal studies now routinely carry
disclaimers about the implications for patients.
           In Rat
Trap, Dr Pound brings us up to date with this deeply controversial
issue. She sets out the evidence for animal models being abandoned
as a matter of urgency, and shows how resistance from some elements
of the scientific community poses a grave threat to medical
progress.’ -- Robert Matthews, visiting professor in statistical
science, Aston University, Birmingham, UK, and author
of Chancing It and 25 Big Ideas

Oceans cover more than 70 percent of the Earth's surface, dividing
and connecting humans, who carry saltwater in their blood, sweat
and tears. At the same time, oceans represent a powerful nonhuman
force, rising, flooding, heating, and raging in unprecedented ways
as the climate crisis unfolds. The sea has long enthralled artists,
who have envisioned it as a sublime wilderness, a home to countless
mythical creatures as well as bizarre real species, a source of
life and death, a site of new beginnings and tragic endings, a
force both wondrous and disastrous. From migration to the melting
of the polar ice caps, the sea is omnipresent in international news
and politics, leaking into popular culture in the wake of the 'Blue
Planet effect' and proliferating in contemporary art and visual
culture. This collection gathers together some of today's most
exciting contemporary artists and writers to address the ocean not
only as a theme but as a major agent of artistic and curatorial
methods. Artists surveyed include Bas Jan Ader, Eileen Agar, John
Akomfrah, Eva Barois De Caevel, Betty Beaumont, Heidi Bucher,
Marcus Coates, Tacita Dean, Mark Dion, Ellen Gallagher, Ayesha
Hameed, Barbara Hepworth, Klara Hobza, Isuma, Brian Jungen, Ana
Mendieta, Kasia Molga, Eleanor Morgan, Wangechi Mutu, Jean Painleve
and Genevieve Hamon, Zineb Sedira, Shimabuku, Christine &
Margaret Wertheim, Alberta Whittle. Writers include Stacy Alaimo,
Michelle Antoinette, Bergit Arends, Erika Balsom, Karen Barad,
Rachel Carson, Marion Endt-Jones, Kodwo Eshun, Vilem Flusser, Paul
Gilroy, Epeli Hau'ofa, Eva Hayward, Stefanie Hessler, Luce

During the 1930s, psychologists Gordon Allport, Gardner Murphy, and
Lois Barclay Murphy emerged from the fields of social and
personality psychology to challenge the neo-behavioralist status
quo in American social science. Willing to experiment with the idea
of 'science' itself, these 'rebels within the ranks' contested
ascendent conventions that cast the study of human life in the
image of classical physics. Drawing on the intellectual, social,
and political legacies of William James' radically empiricist
philosophy and radical Social Gospel theology, these three
psychologists developed critiques of scientific authority and
democratic reality as they worked at the crossroads of the social
and the personal in New Deal America. Appropriating models from
natural history, they argued for the significance of individuality,
contextuality and diversity as scientific concepts as they explored
what they envisioned as the nature of democracy, and the democracy
of nature.
This book examines the work of social and personality psychologists who, in the 1930s, criticized the increasingly restrictive vision of scientific life being promoted by neobehaviorist social scientists. This critique has been overlooked by historians who have concentrated on the rise of neobehaviorism, rather than the challenges advanced by such "rebels within the ranks" as Gordon Allport, Gardner Murphy, and Lois Barclay Murphy. All three contributed to ongoing public and professional debates about democracy and the authority of scientific knowledge in New Deal America.
Rollo, an inquisitive and determined puppy, has made up his mind -
he wants to go to the moon. He is sure that he only has to get into
a laboratory to be included in the space programme. With great
difficulty he achieves this aim, but he finds himself caught up in
something far more sinister and from which there seems to be no
escape. Rollo's distraught parents, Henry and Henrietta, television
stars who promote the dog food Scrunch, mastermind a superb
search-and-rescue operation involving thousands of animals. An
exciting and amusing animal story with a strong message about the
horrors of cruelty to animals.
